The Qubit

The University of the Philippines Information Technology Training Center (UP ITTC) has just released the maiden issue of The Qubit. The January 2012 issue highlights UP ITTC's achievements in the past year.

What is Free and Open Source Software?

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is making a huge impact on the society in a number of ways. By definition, FOSS is “any computer software that permits the user to access the program’s source code, modify it and distribute any derivative work under a license… It is designed to encourage the free use and improvement of software by ensuring that anyone can access the source code and modify it freely” (Benjamin et al. 2009).

Game Development in the Philippines

The Philippine game development industry, it may be argued, is still in its infancy stage. The argument is supported by the fact that the size of game development companies in the country is still small—only 10 to 15 were recorded as of October 2006 (JETRO Philippine IT Industry Update: 2007-No. 1) and 32 by the first quarter of 2010 (Tolentino 2010).

Career Opportunities in IT

There has been in recent years an upsurge in the number of companies turning to outsourcing services. The Philippines, for instance, which is fast becoming a premier hub for such services including software programming and other Information Technology (IT)-related skills, benefits much from this trend, as it is able to generate jobs for thousands of Filipinos and increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Last year’s revenues from the outsourcing industry totaled $9 billion, posting a 4.5% growth in the GDP (Bajaj).

One University, One UP

Steps are now undertaken by the University of the Philippines (UP) to regain its position as among the top-ranking universities in the Asia-Pacific region. The e-UP, the administration’s flagship project, forms part of the UP Strategic Plan 2011-2017: The Path to Greatness whose goal is to enable the university to take a leadership role in the development of a globally-competitive Philippines. The project involves both the Office of the Vice-President for Development (OVPD) and the UP Information Technology Training Center (UP ITTC).

UP ITTC: Creating the Future Leaders of the Industry

At the University of the Philippines Information Technology Training Center (UP ITTC), industry leaders are born and tested. Since its establishment in 2004, the UP ITTC has built a reputation of producing graduates who later on take the helm of companies and contribute to the shaping of the IT industry. As the country’s top IT institution, the Center has become a host to individuals who, because stimulated by the climate of discussion the Center promotes, pave avenues to new knowledge in the field, instead of merely following well-worn paths.
